So at long last I get around to writing about our final day in Belgium. Quite tired out after a long and busy weekend of rushing around we had finally decided that what we loved most about Belgium was being able to just sit down and chill out. So that's what we spent the day doing, for the most part.
After we checked out of the hotel, we left our bags at reception and headed down to the insanely cheap middle eastern French patisserie down the road. These kind of places are amazing of course, though expecting the people in the shop to have any grasp of English is perhaps asking a bit too much. Spoils in hand, we headed back to the square in front of the hotel so Kristen could take a comprehensive look around the flea market.
While she was doing this, I sat down at one of the cafes around the square and had a coffee. By the time I had finished, Kristen had found herself a nice scarf/hat that she managed to bargain down to a very reasonable price. I will show some pictures of this flea market in the gallery at the bottom.
Next, we walked into the centre of Brussels and decided to check out the Delirium bar, which boasts a ridiculous number of different beers from around the world. Around 2000, if they are to be believed. Kristen got a little over friendly with a dog in the bar and it nipped at her, which was probably more her fault than the dog's.
After our drinks, we had ourselves a giant helping of frites and a frite baguette. You read correctly: A frite baguette. A baguette, cut down the middle and filled with crispy fries and a burger patty. Absolutely insane. We actually headed back to Delirium after this and went to the cellar bar where they keep all of their beers. They really do have an impressive selection there and the skills of the barman were pretty intense.
Feeling a tiny bit drunk, we went down to Carrefour to load up on groceries. Carrefour is like the ultimate French supermarket, but this one had a lot of special Belgian stuff. We were able to get the same chocolate sold in the tourist shops for so much cheaper here, and the sauces aisle is a sight to behold. We left there was an assortment of different ones which now take a pride of place upon our kitchen shelf.
We dragged our booty back to the hotel and... had another carb baguette on the way, I am not ashamed to admit. It really is the ultimate food, please don't judge me. Having a bit of time to kill before we left for London again, we chilled out at the same bar where I had my coffee that morning and had a drink. I really appreciated how the people working there were listening to the Pixies and then Stephen Malkmus, although that's probably just me.
Soon enough it was time to board our train again, which is decidedly the most painless way to enter and leave a country. We were back in Kings Cross in no time, feeling like we had just stepped from the platform 3/4 of the way between 9 and 10, a little more worldly from another amazing journey.
