Morocco Day 4

Our 4th day in Morocco, Sunday the 24th of August, was our last whole day in the country. We left the riad in the morning to go in search of the Saadian tombs, a collection of graves that date back to the late 16th century. We wandered about the streets trying our best not to get completely lost.

Our search brought us through an Aladdin's cave of a house full of treasures of all kinds. This was not like a souk, but rather a large house with many rooms, each holding some other kind of Moroccan good. Carpets, jewellery, clothing, plates and giant kettles. I'm sure it was put there mostly for the benefit of the tourists, but we did get a reasonable price on a large metal platter.

After exiting through the back door, we wandered right past the mosque that held the Saadian tombs and continued on down the twisting alleys until we were totally sure we were lost and then had to backtrack. It is very easy to do this in Morocco due to the lack of signs and due to the fact that I refused to accept directions from anyone that wasn't a tourist (The locals always seemed to want payment). Eventually we found the entrance and paid our 10 dirham entry fee.

The tombs were very quiet and beautiful and also quite small, but well worth the effort to find them. After we left, we felt it was time to get a snack for lunch, so we went back to our favourite little café on the edge of the square. Kristen had a Pastilla, which is a kind of light pastry filled with chicken and spices and powdered with sugar.

After lunch we spent the afternoon wandering about and doing some shopping, which is entirely easy to do in Marrakesh.

After dark, we went to another café on the square and had another meal of tagine and little fried sausages. Afterwards, we wandered around the square which was packed with locals. There were groups of them playing instruments, while others clustered around storytellers all speaking in Arabic.

The following morning we were whisked away at 7am by taxi to the airport and flown back to London town. By my count I've now been to 11 countries over 5 continents. Still so much to see.
